tremper giants.........

iluvblackfrancis Jun 16, 2003 03:41 PM

has anyone bought any of these from Tremper himself yet? if so, do you know if it's worth the extra $50 to get one fathered by Moose?

I have a pair and I think Brad(ley?) does does too. I don't have one of moose's offspring though, so I can't really say. I don't think alot of the giants reach the monster proportions he is at, so having his direct offspring would probably give you a batter chance of getting one closer to his size.

ok, now i know this is all matter of opinion, but i really can't decide. for my b-day may parents agreed to buy me another gecko from Tremper. i have narrowed it down to either an albino reverse stripe, or a giant, which do you guys think will make a better investment, keeping in mind, i don't have a giant female or reverse stripe female to go with it. i'll be breeding which ever i get to normal albinos.

Go for the reverse stripe. I think it would be better than giant. I dont really understand the whole giants genetics. Plus, reverse stripe is something that could show up in the first generation, and they are still few and far apart.

thanx, thats what i WILL do then. im sorta uneasy about the giants, i mean, it doesnt seem possible that you can have hets for big. plus the reverse stripes are beautiful.

I dont really get it either. The giants were line-bred right?? Now they are classified as recessive?? You cant have hets. for tang so why should you be able to have hets. for giant.

im going to say that i think this is what he claims, only because if im wrong, i don't wanna be smeared. but if i remember correctly, he said he had an unusually large hatchling, then when it grew, he bred it back to its large mother and it bred true. there must be more to the story, because it just doesnt make sense. for those of you that have them, and have bred them, what have you seen?

Oh well I must've read something different. But I still dont think I would invest that much into them when there are so many other options.

What I dont really get is that he says there should be a 12 geckos out soon, but how can they be getting bigger if they're reccessive? albino x albino = albino but giant giant = bigger giant? Maybe its a little of both? i dunno, but personally, I like leos the size they are, big, but not too big. Though I do have to admit it would be cool to have leos as big as bearded dragons! now that would awsome...

ya, it would be kool, except, the room they would take up would be astronomical(sp?). i like the size of my 1st male, Joe, he's about 10in, perfect.

Yeah, thats true, they wouldnt be as easy to keep, think of the food items!!!!lol We'd need Super Jumbo Extra large Superworms!
My female is 9.5 inches, and I like her at that length, though i dont know how much she weighs, Id gues around 70-80 grams atleast with the tail shes got. L8er

Ron Tremper had an unually large het for albino hacth from his albino colony. He bred them to his largest females, and didn't get any the size of the origional male. He then bred all those offspring to the father and got Tremper Giants. He didn't line breed this mutation, it hatched randomly just like a normal ressesive. In a way it is a ressesive because there is only one general size for the Tremper Giant Male, and thats at or aroung 100 grams, and Moose being a draw of luck just as if you were to hatch a stunning super hypo super tangerine carrottail from a tangerine and carrottail. You don't see all kinds of weights like you do all kinds of colors on tangerines. I think hatching a larger Tremper Giant would be harder then if you were trying to hatch a better looking tangerine. I think Giants are in some way ressesive because of this and they can get bigger but not at the rate that tangerines get more and more orange. Its like breeding two albinos and then getting an albino thats brighter or has less pattern, it can happen but not very often. I don't know Giants seem like an interesting project, and I plan on breeding these almost exclusivly. If I were you I would buy the Tremper Giant because reverse stripes are either not very popular or breeders are taking their time with this morph because they seem to sell very slowly and I havn't seen any available with the exception from Ron Tremper, A&M gecko, and K&N reptiles. Tremper Giants offer more possiblities, as in you could breed it to mutations and mutaions, you could even breed it into the reverse stripe. Its up to you but as far as investments, it seems the Giants are the way to go.

If anyone is still lost on this discussion there is a pretty informative FAQ on Ron's website. It made perfect sense to me, and the way I see it there's no reason a simple recessive trait cannot be line bred, this is after all how any line of reptiles is improved, normal or morph.

ZeR0 Jun 18, 2003 03:37 PM

Yeah, now that I think about it, the first albinos werent so great looking, but after breeding htem, they got better, so its kinda line bred too, but not really. Hope I didnt sound like an idiot or something,
