retained eye caps

lizard_flames May 09, 2004 10:22 AM

I recently bought my first ball python. I looked him over for all of the problems listed in the ball python manual and couldn't see any. A day after he came home I noticed a very faint horizontal line on his eyes. Two days later his eyes look opaque. I think he has retained eye caps so I increased his humidity and gave him natural tears eye drops per the manual. So after all of that I have two questions. Is it retained eye caps, and how long should I wait to use the method where you wrap scotch tape on your finger backwards and gently adhear the tape to the eye caps and slowly remove them? Since this is a fairly common problem I would appreciate any help. Thanks in advance.

You can coat the entire snake in cooking oil for acouple days and it will remove the caps. The snake is far better off left alone then to stick its eye with tape.I know myself I would rather be left alone.
Forcefully removing eyes caps only serves the keeper IMO,the snake can do just fine until its next shed with "proper care"
If anyone is forceing a wild animal to do "anything" that person needs another hobby.
