Del Rio area lodging

happycamper Jun 16, 2003 03:55 PM

Can anyone give me some suggestions for CHEAP motels around Del Rio? My goal is the CHEAPEST! As long as it has AC. Happycamper is only happy camping when it is cool at night...and I don't want to waste time pitching camp when I could just crash for a few hours during the morning at a cheapo motel! Gracias...

Yeah, go to the Desert Hills, also known as Desert Swills, or even the Desert pubes. This used to be the big hang out for most of the Herpers, but this was at least 8-10 years ago. You said you want cheap, air conditioning, etc. and well, they do have some things there that I think might be beds. Seriously, I think you should stay at Motel 6, or Super 8. Happy Herping.

LOL........Wayne, I think you are the only one that calls it the Desert Pubes. The Motel 6 always gets my vote as to bang for the buck, plus they are used to seeing snake hunters. By the way............are you going to draw a blank on the River Road this year? .....AGAIN! Congrats on your Arizona pyro!

Steve, Are you coming to Texas soon?? If you do, give me a shout when you pass through "Hip Town". Since you love the Desert Pubes so well, (you know, the cheapie rooms and stuff) will you be staying there??? Let everyone know how many critters you see running around the rooms, and I don't mean the snakes. Take care.

I stayed at the Desert Hills Motel on my very first trip out
west about 6 years ago....I think it ended up costing more
there than Motel 6....I chekced in, went and got something to
eat, hunted all night and then BEGGED Motel 6 for an early check
in the following morning.
Motel 6 was 29.99 during the week and 37.99 on the weekend
nights when I was there. I think the Regency Inn? was 29.99
every night.

Wayne, are you going to be around this weekend? I'll probably
come collect my snakes.

Bring a huge can of extra strength raid.

I remember a couple of years ago my Wife and I got into Del Rio Late and the Motel 6 was booked solid. So we looked into the Desert Hills and they had vacancies and offered to let me check a room out.

I took the key and opened the door and everything looked good except for the woman asleep on the bed. Had she woke up it would have looked real bad, so I quietly closed the door and locked it.

When I got back to the office to let them know about the mistake there was another guy in there looking for a refund on the days he had not used yet. It seems that he paid for several days and the cockroaches were scaring his children (his words not mine). But the night manager said the owner is the only one that could give any kind of refund but they would be at home in Mexico all week.

I did not stay long enough to find out how that ended, I hope the guy got what he was asking for, it was reasonable. I just put the keys on the counter and left. I forget what Motel we stayed at that weekend, but after my little experience I was ready to tell my wife "we're sleeping in the car tonight honey".

I have stayed here about 8 times and called for my reservations in Aug. and cost is $29 and some change a night. YOU are closer to the west ( Comstock ) and close to 277. They have a pool and use to have nice rooms . Only trouble is you might have to drive closer to in town for food.

but who wants to deal with the border crossing half dead at 5am?

The motel 6 offers better rates if you book online than if you show up at the door.

For smuggling snakes into Mexico? And just imagine getting caught taking them back out.

Did we stay in the la quinta this year or ramada. I like that place...Clean, not cheap at 50 a night... but nice...

Also that place as you enter the town on the left... It used to be called the red roof inn... Remember we saw a brown recluse in the bathroom...

Good Luck,

Steve
