refrigerating mealies

Nicko Jun 16, 2003 04:00 PM

If I buy a bunch of mealworms, am I right in thinking I can refrigerate them so they last longer alive? I thought I saw that on here somewhere. Also, if it is possible, do you have to throw food in with all of them or are they in suspended animation or something?

Well, yes, actually mealwoprms are to be kept in the refrigerator. And yes, you have to put some food in there...either chicken food or oatmeal.

The mealies go into hibernation and will freeze in their growing process. During this time they are barely alive and will not eat so it is useless to put food in with them.

Thanks for the info. I just ordered a ton of them today, becuase even if I dont get to use them all, its still way cheaper than buying by the dozen at my petstore.

yep mealworms yes, superworms(zoophoba) no. They should come packed in a bedding of some type just put them in the fridge like that if they are not too packed. Just take out a day or so worth and put them in a unrefridgerated container to gutload them with chick feed or gutload feeds. Superworms cannot be refridgerated it will kill them quickly they are a tropical species.
