ACF Afraid of food//not eating!! PLEASE HELP ASAP!!!

frogglover21 May 09, 2004 02:01 PM

I have 3 otherwise healthy african clawed frogs that are a little under a year old (one albino/2green). Over the past 2 weeks one by one they have each stoped showing interest in eating frozen blood worms, which they LOVED with a passion. my albino one used to eat it right from my hand... he lived for those worms and now he wont eat it if its right in front of his nose (literally)!! i dont know what to do...maybe they're bored of the food? please post anything you know or heard about this problem as soon as possible!!! thanks in advance!

I had the same trouble with Reptomin or dry food. Once the frogs became nearly adults, they lost interest in their dry food. Try switching to crickets, earthworms, feeder fish (guppies and rosy reds, not goldfish) and mealworms. Gutloading crickets is a good idea. If you were fed exclusively on the same food item, wouldn't you get a little bored too? I've seen other frogs do it too, if fed crickets all the time.

This is, assuming that your frogs are healthy. I have definitely noticed clawed frogs have their own food preferences. My male is very finicky, while my female will eat just about anything. I have seen where the frogs take the food, and then spit it out. Crickets is what gets almost all frogs going. Sometimes your frogs may reject mealworms as they are tough skinned. Sometimes they may not want worms, as they can be difficult to restrain (if you don't cut them up first). I personally freeze my crickets and thaw them out when its feeding time.
