Gecko with swollen eye

petunia100 May 09, 2004 03:43 PM

I have a 4 year old Fan footed Gecko. Within the last 2 months one of her eyes has repeatedly become swollen. The swelling typically lasts only one or two days, there is no discharge. The most recent period of swelling (about the third time it has happened) is taking longer to subside than previously. She is still eating normally, and behaving normally, the eye doesn't really seem to be bothering her but it is definately swollen. I live in an area with few veterinarians, let alone anyone who will look at a gecko. Any advice?

It may something to do with a parasite similar to what causes trichinosis

In most cases this is caused by a vitamin A deficiency. Gutload the crickets with beta carotene which can be found in carrots and I believe prunes. This also usually goes hand in hand with B and E deficiencies. Look all those up and see which one matches your description best. If the swelling comes in and out I doubt that this is a parasite infection (although it may be, my knowledge of this is limited) however from my knowledge it is caused by a gland that generates an "eye wash" type of substance behind the eye. This usually helps the gecko clean the eye but when lacking vitamins it goes haywire and begins the eye problems you encountered. Hope this helps, but by all means attempt to find a good licenced vet.
