new baby water monitor

jvicars4 May 09, 2004 05:38 PM

i rec'd a speckled water monitor about a week ago. he is approximately 15-17" total. He is full of life and everytime I take him out he either bites, tails whips, poops or all three. The biting gets old. How long until he begins to "tame". I have owned several monitors in the past including black throat, dumerils and savannahs and never had one want to bite so much.

I am wearing gloves for now. Advice? Thanks.

Sounds like you have a real monitor on your hands. If he is biting out of hunger feed him, if it seems to be more of an I am scared thing. That will fade away in time if you build a bond with him. This just means they learn to tolerate you and see you non threatening.

But be prepared for the tail whipping, biting, defecating later on too just in case. If the biting hurts wear a glove, there is nothing wrong with a gloved hand, but a de-gloved hand hurts badly LOL.
