Alternative to Bug Breeding...

ZeroX May 09, 2004 06:46 PM

There is no way in the world I could ever breed bugs. My family will just NOT allow it. So can I just buy enough worms to last my leo about a week with any of them turning into beetles? My mom and sisters would totally flip. I just cannot breed mealworms...

Would it be too costly to get enough to last each week and buy more the week after that?

How long does it take for mealworms to turn into beetles?

Can I buy a worm that is actually a worm, that is nutritious, and that isn't a larvae?

Will there be a huge chance of them turning into beetles (within just one week) that will breed and create chaos?

Where can I find cheap, inexpensive mealworms?

Crickets, roaches, grasshoppers are a big no no. My sisters would scream their heads off!

Please help! I'm desperate!

simple solution...keep them refridgerated. Well...just hide them in the back so no one see's them, lol. If you refridgerate them, they wont morph and you can keep them as long as a month or two (not sure..mine dont last that long) I believe.

Ooh thanks. What about a freezer? Will you kill them by freezing them? Also, once you are ready to feed them to your gecko, what do you do? Do you take them out, let them thaw, gut load them, and sprinkle them with calicum?

most geckos will not eat anything that doesnt move. I know mine will stare at them until the move a great deal. If you freeze them, they are dead. If you put them in the refridgerator, they will hibernate (if thats the correct word) and once they warm up again, will be just like they were before you put them in.
Calcium doesnt stick very well to mealworms as it does crickets, so what I do is I just put them in a spare bowl with some extra calcium and mist them very lightly one time to make the calcium stick a bit.
