Curious abut a substrate.

amazinglyricist May 09, 2004 07:19 PM

I've been using the special reptile carpet for my leos, is this ok for a substrate, it can't cause impaction, the only problem I've had with it is when they grab a cricket hooking a tooth to it once in a while and it taking them a miniute to get free

Getting caught on the carpet is the biggest problem with it, as well as keeping it clean. You can continue to use it...but there is a possibility that one of them may get caught enough that they can't get loose at all and end up dropping their tail (happened to someone on the forum...). I've heard that getting caught is less of a problem if you turn it over and use the other side. I would recommend switching to tile (see the thread below where I recommended it for why I recommend it)...but it's your choice

What kind of tile are ou referring to, he kind used for landscaping or the kind used for house floors. Stone or plastic or rubber or vinyl? Too many kinds of tiles, lol.

Just floor tiles...ceramic, stone, or vinyl. I use vinyl because they can be cut with scissors...ceramic or stone you would have to get cut if they don't fit perfectly. Also, ceramic and stone tiles don't fit together perfectly and the cracks need to be filled with something usually.

then you are using the wrong side. Switch it over to the other side.

Actually, it doen't happen too often, only once in while when lunging for a cricket and teh cricket moves out of the way at he last second. It's usually just a tooth that gets hooked on teh carpet, I've never seen them have an problems with their claws getting hooked.

i know. But on carpet there is two sides. Feel both sides and use the side that feels like it has less fibers coming out.

I usually do that, and I switch it over everytime I clean it, and toss it out after a couple months and get a new one. And yes I clean real good, it looks new when I get done cleaning it, by turning it over, it gives it a longer amount of time I can use it before I throw it away.

how much did you pay for it? I found that the cheaper it is (like $1 for a 10 gallon size) the better it is. The expensive ones are usually worse.

I paid like $7.00 for it at the pet shop, it's the ESU REptile Lizard Liner, presized for the 10 gallon tank I have the 2 babies in.
