Looking into getting a monitor...

raiquee May 09, 2004 09:40 PM

I have read up about them a bit, and decided the best for me currently is the Ackies. However, I can't seem to find a breeder with any, anywhere! They seem fairly common, does anyone know of any good breeders they can recommend me to?

Also, i read through this forum and heard about the chick diet. I know monitors love to eat eggs, and are typically big egg eaters, but by chick diet do you mean buying frozen chicks, or eggs? I'm just confused and need someone to tell me whats what there

Also, when my Ackie gets full grown, will he probably be able to take down adult mice? How about chicks? Or will he be able to take down even bigger? I don't have a problem with that, just wanting to know what i can expect from the little tyke.

Although i find the Nile's the most appealing to my eyes, I heard they are fairly aggressive and Ackies are the best to keep tame and the like. Hence why i am sticking with an Ackie. I have read you can keep them in groups, can i keep a pair of them not knowing sex? Or will males fight just like with so many other animals?

Thanks for dealing with my stupid questions, you guys gotta love em

There are quite a few ackie breeders out there, check the classifieds.

"by chick diet do you mean buying frozen chicks, or eggs?"

When I say chicks I mean day old chicks.

"Also, when my Ackie gets full grown, will he probably be able to take down adult mice? How about chicks? Or will he be able to take down even bigger?"

Mine feed mostly on crickets and pinkies, upto hoppers. I don't see them swallowing a chick. But then again there are some bigger ackies out there then mine maybe they can take bigger prey items.

"can i keep a pair of them not knowing sex? Or will males fight just like with so many other animals?"

Thats a tough one, they may fight they may not fight. That depends on them really and how they get along. I could not tell you how the outcome of introducing two animals will end up. I have 2.2 together in a cage it works for me (please remember I said for me). Your outcome may be different then mine.

Good luck with them.

I do not think that a chicken-chick would be small enough for an adult ackie to consume, however button quail are only about the size of a quarter when hatched, perhaps they might be more suitable in size. I do not see a need for feeding chicks; in my opinion, roaches, and mice do fine with my monitors, and of course, I mix in some different insect prey from time to time all supplemented with viatamin/mineral powder.

As far as temperment goes, ackies in my opinion are unmatched. You have made a great decision and commend you on doing your research. There are many people who do not read up on their pets...which usually leads to problems down the line. I wish you the best of luck with your future purchase! Take care,

--- Check the classifieds here on KS, they are offered frequently.

--- Stick with insects and mice, ackies are [generally] small.

--- Althouh Ackies are pretty mellow if you buy a pair of hatchling siblings it will decrease the chance of any agression even further.
