A lot of reptiles do defecate in their water. And it's completely normal for them to do that. I'm not sure if the same holds true for Leos.

On the bright side - you don't have to change the substrate as often!

So is your leo just walking over to the water dish and pooping, then leaving, or is it spending time in it's water dish? If it is spending time in there, I'd say it has mites. That's usually a tell tale sign your herp has mites. Check out this page to get help with mites:

Well mine just goes over, stands on top of her dish, poops and leaves. I have yet to see her drink from it, allthough I wouldn't blame her, she thinks it's a toilet. I keep her humid hide moist enought that I think she must get her water from that.

and if your leo is pooping in the water dish you cannot re-use that dish without disinfecting it first. I suggest you use a bleach and water mix to give it a thorough cleaning.

Move the dish away from his "bathroom area" then your leo wont poop in the same spot.

I've tried moving it, but haven't disinfected it. I only wash it with a mild dish soap every night.
