Very interesting post. I believe these Asian ratsnakes are more hardy than we give them credit for most of the time. Of course, your baby Mandarin was probably inactive, brumating, most of the winter. The same thing happened to me with a yearling red-headed ratsnake, E. moellendorffi. She was gone for seven months and survived a Northern Michigan winter in the walls and attic of our house. I found her on top of a mouse cage in late May. She is a smaller adult than a normal moellendorffi, but she is healthy and capable of breeding. She is also very wild. Good luck getting your Mandarin back in shape. It will probably do well.
