I use a mixture of peat moss and vermiculite. I think perlite is too abrasive on the leos skin to be using as a humid or laying box substrate.

Paper towels, sphagnum moss, or the 2 that I mentioned above will work fine. If you are working with eggs, then dont use paper towels.
