Got My first clutch and I am psyched! Mom doesn't seem so good though.

Jonah May 10, 2004 09:51 AM

So my 02 amel female laid 16 eggs. Maybe 1 or two are slugs. My kids and I were jumping up and down we were so happy. The proud father is my 02 okeetee from Kathy Love.
I have all 16 ( a clump of 14 and 2 loose ones) burried in sphangum moss in a large size deli cup. The Hovabator fluctuates from 80-84F throughout the day. So all seems well with the eggs. The mom however refused the fuzzy I offered her 3 weeks prior to laying so I offered an adult mouse a week later and she regurged (her first regurge ever). That was about a week before her pre laying shed. Then after I took the eggs from her on saturday I offered another fuzzy which she again refused. So now were going on 4 weeks since her last mouse and she's looking really skinny. What do you think? Should I worry?

Ok, First off the eggs and the kids look great! It is good to see them excited about the snakes too. Second, Mom may have regurged because she could not eat such a big meal so close to laying time. A snake that is about to lay eggs won't be able to pass a big meal like that.
Pick her up and feel her belly to make sure that there are no more eggs still in her. She should quickly go into shed. Once she has shed again then I would feed her weanling mice. Start with one, give it a week to make sure it stays down then you can give her one every 3-5 day for a month or so until she puts weight back on. After a month or so passes with this small but often feeding cycle then you can go back to your normal feeding plan. Keep in mind that she may produce a second clutch, in which you will have to do it all over again LOL.
Some gravid snakes go off feed for much longer then 4 weeks so it is not abnormal, but don't try and feed her too big of a meal.
Good luck

I did check her for more eggs and I can't feel any. Also she looks so skinny, I think I would see them if they were there. Is it common for them to double clutch without a second breeding? I have heard they store sperm but that would be a long time for the sperm to stay viable. Thanks for all the help.

yes they will double clutch with or without a male being introduced again. Of course the male beinf reintroduced will help with the fertility of the second clutch but they still may all be viable if not. But unless she gets some food into her she may not be strong enough to lay the next group.
Good Luck
