jacksonsrule May 10, 2004 11:30 AM

Does anyone know of a good alternative to egg carton to use for crickets to live on? I can't get egg carton. Thanks.

Drink Holders from McDonald's, 7-11, or other places?
Paper towel tubes or Toilet paper tubes.
Crumbled up newspaper.
Use your imagination.

I sometimes use toilet paper and paper towel rolls. Ask your friends and family to save the their egg cartons for you. If you live anywhere near a feed store you can buy the empty cartons for about 15 cents each. You can also buy them online (see below). I like them best b/c you can set them up on an angle to keep the poop from building up (adds to smell and more deaths).

Little late seeing your post, but here's what I do. I just put a thin layer of rolled oats from Tractor & Supply in the bottom of my bin. Then I add a few egg crates, give them a watersource, and they're good to go. Thay eat the rolled oats all the time, and you can also add other more nutritious things as you choose, but the are fine with no additional help - it's just amatter of nutritious you want your bugs to be. I keep 1000 nearly full grown crix this way. When the next shippment comes in, just dump the old out and start over. A 10 lb bag of rolled oats will last a while at this rate.

just a lil' food for thought...lol
the reason for eggcrate is for added surface area a few eggcrate
doubles your surface area and allows more crickets to be held in the container with less chance of fighting! now if i could do the same with chameleons id be rich...lol

p.s. just kiddin' everyone lol
