What locality of Eastern Kingsnake has the best color....

Keith Hillson May 10, 2004 12:38 PM

in terms of cleanliness of the crossbars ? When I refer to them being dirty crossbars its not the black tipping (if they have that) but the gray to brownish color that creeps into the white or yellow crossbars with age on some Easterns.

Here is an example of two different ends of the spectrum. Ive seen them even dirtier than the Georgia animal pictured as well.

In my opinion I think that that North and South Carolina have on average the cleanest Eastern Kings.

That being said the best adult Eastern Ive had for bright white super clean crossbars is my female NJ Eastern pictured above.

I don't have any 'older' easterns, my 3 are still babies and all 3 have orange in their crossbars to different degrees.

But Thomas Davis' 14 yr old eastern 'Cleo' seems to have nice white crossbars, and that snake is what, 14 he said? The bars are very thin, but seem very bright. What locality is that snake?

well sorry eastcoast animals are the nicest looking IMHO,im not gonna say a state or county in a state, just seems silly to me,,i kinda think they tend to be more clean patterned from sc.on up nc.va.,md.nj kinda start getting muddy more to the south and the west influence from other getula ssp, within their range,, now IMHO clean/muddy patterns could/can be found ANYWHERE in their range, so all i can say is eastcoast, sorry,,,

But the ones I've seen here in NC generally have very white crossbars, only a bit thicker in bar width than those further, such as your Jersey girl. Northern SC, seems to be very similar but the more southern ones I've seen are very "off-white" colored, though very thick crossbars.

I've seen a handful of pics of Easterns from the Virginia Beach area (a few from your site, in fact) and I have always been awestruck.
They have wide stark white bands and clean dark black bodies! They are something to behold, IMHO.

On Keith's Eastern King site, under the Virginia locality, check out the one from Pungo Ridge. That King is awsome. I think Keith said Pungo Ridge is Va.Beach. I have a South Carolina locality Eastern, now I might have to check on getting a Virginia locality.

Talk to Howie Sherman at Strikers Herps . He produced that Pungo Ridge animal on my site.

Many of the kings that I have found in southern Virginia, northeast NC, and parts of south central SC have clean looking crossbars.
I've only found a few in southeast NC and northeast SC but from the ones that I have seen tend to have dirtier crossbars.

They combine the qualities of a good thick eastern with shoreline influences of Albemarle sound and the Outer Banks--however remote.Joe H found the best one I have seen a couple years ago, another was posted recently by Tony D I think....nice animals,Jeff

That is a difficult question for me Keith, but…..I tend to like the South Georgia individuals, like many other participants on this forum. Will Still's S.G. pair sired by the famous Stattenville County male with high contrasting wide white bands are my favorite. And for the extreme ……Will Still’s extra wide banded individuals found on your E.K. website are what I will strive for in breeding my 1.1 Will Stills 03 offspring, mine too are running close to 30 inches now. From my understanding, this race from S.G. gets huge.

Buzz Jehle of East Texas was the original owner of Thomas Davis’ excellent large narrow banded male. I e-mailed Buzz after viewing Thomas’ post and he told me that his Eastern King progeny are still thriving in the Herp Community. He also stated that he has “ran” into a few adults from his decade past clutches that all turned out exceptional and huge. It is nice to know a selected few of long time past clutches make it to the ripe old age of 10, good job Thomas!

Keith, do you have an opinion on which of the two races overall gets larger on a regular basis (NJ-thin banded or SG-thick banded.) IMO, color is important….. but girth and overall length of this species makes them special to me. I currently have an 02 male from Kevin Enge that has been on a feeding schedule (Chondro garbage disposal) of two Med. Rats per week, and sometimes more depending on if he will take. He is the offspring of the Statenville male x an Edisio (sp) Island female, actually nothing really special from his outwardly appearance but he is close to 5 feet now, shedding regularly, kept alittle warm with no growth stopping end in site…..when I think of my feeding regime with this individual, I can not help comparing it to the famous huge brooski “Rat Wrecker” that was housed at a pet shop that I bet was fed well! Sorry about my ramblings….I do not post much ….but I like this forum and all the great posts on the getulas complex!

I think the Georgia animals for sure get larger. Thomas' snake is more the exception than the rule I think. I have a near 20 year old NJ Eastern and he isnt quite 5' so its not just age but obvioulsy genetics. Will Still has a pair of Burlington Co., NJ Easterns and they are on their way to being quite large I believe.

Wow sounds like a beast at near 5' and only 2 years old ! You have to post some pics of him. Thats basically the same track my 2003 male is on and I dont power feed at all. That line seems to have some real giant genetics attached with it and apparantly pulling a little SC "Mosaic" into the mix in your case didnt stunt its growth any lol.

One of my goals in breeding Easterns is going to be making large Easterns that stay nice and clean and bright. Nothing is more impressive than a 6' bright white banded animal. I will do this by mixing localities although I will still breed locale animals as well. Ive been kicking around the idea of breeding the my orange and black male GA to my super clean NJ female next year. Should make for some cool looking offspring I would hope.
