Green Iguana, three years and only the size of a baby??

tegu2002 May 10, 2004 12:41 PM

My green iguana is three years old and we bought him a couple of weeks ago, but the thing is he is only the size of a baby. Is this possible?? Anyway, I want to build him a nice new cage that is bigger than the one he is in now but I'm not sure what I should do?? I was wondering if anyone has every made a cage out of a cupboard for their iguanas?? And if they did could they send me some pictures or tell me whether it would be better to put the cupboard upright on on its side???

yes that is possible...improper food and UVb will stunt growth of the iguana ....are you sure they said 3 yrs old? not 3 months old?
maybe a misunderstanding? or they saidthe wrong thing? do you have pics of the ig? babies look like babies...an older animal will look older...make sure he is getting dark leafy greens like collard, mustard, dandelion and proper UVb like reptisun 5.0 by zoomed...good luck....Lyn

Katie,

I've seen you post before & I just wanted you to know that I don't think the other owners here are dogging you, I just don't know of anyone that has made an enclosure out of a cupboard.

Do you have a clauset available?

I'm not good at this as Forest is a free roamer but maybe some others have some ideas for a young girl like yourself.

Do you have anyone that would help you? Maybe you could have them set down with you & look at some posts. You mentioned your Dad once?

Good luck Katie.

Hi Katie,

I don't know if a cupboard would be the best idea. For one, all that dense wood is going to be hard to keep clean & will probably soak up a lot of moisture. Prime breeding ground for lots of nasties. Plus you won't have much of a view of your new baby!

When I was about your age, I got my first parrot, and my father helped me build a really nice aviary for him. The whole thing was very, very simple -- wood base, frame of 2x2" lumber, and covered in hardware cloth (wire mesh). It didn't cost much at all, was easy to build, and easy to clean. Maybe you & your dad (I think you mentioned he's helping out, right?) could come up with something similar for your ig. You'd probably want to modify the sides to be at least partly plexiglass (to keep more heat in).

If your dad is helping you with all this, perhaps the two of you can sit down together with a sketchpad & a pencil, and come up with some good ideas.

Best of luck to you,

Do you have any pictures of a suitable cage that someone has built in the past out of plexi glass or something?? My dad and mum said they would help me. At the time I will be building a cage for myy argentine tegus aswell as they are growing fast. The reason I am asking about the cgae is that the pet shop that I got the iguana from said he was 3 years old and isnt growing, but he is only the size of a baby and he eats alot every day. So I really don't believe that he is a baby. Also he is very nervous of humans and so I dont think he could have been living with someone for three years and still be so fidgety around them. Does this happen often, because I'm a bit confused.

If an animal is mistreated arent they skitish around someone that cares about them? Fear outweighs anything. He could very well be an adult. he needs a vet exam to see what kind of nasties he has as well as if he has MBD that needs treatment.
