Fecal Bad News

beardiegirl May 10, 2004 02:55 PM

On Saturday I finally got a stool sample from Lollie. I took it in right away and they called me back and said she has eggs in her but they arent sure what to do. They said for me to call today and they would let me know what they were going to do. I am still waiting for them to call me back. Lollie is getting worse...her energy just went way down in the last 3-4 days. She was fine on Thrusday, a little differnt on Friday so I didnt want it to get bad so I watched for her to poo and when she did i took it in immediately. This is the result I got. Anyone ever had egg problems? Are they easier to get rid of? My poor baby. I feel so bad for her. I dont want anything to happen to her. She has totally lost her appetite and so I have been force feeding her baby food for the last few days. She was eating some crickets and worms but now she wont eat anything but her baby food. I think the poo sample I took in last time was Rocky’s since they said there was little coccidia found and in her there are only eggs. Rocky is doing fine but it seems to be bothering her whatever it is.
One question....she is always gapping...could that be because she is trying to get them out of her? Man I just hate to see her not feeling well. It sucks. I have been making sure she atleast eats baby foods and I ordered her some silkies and now I have to give her meds. The vet said whatever it was they werent gonna have me come in for a physical they were just gonna give the meds....so i am assuming its not something to mess around with?

I was also wondering...here is a pic of the two together Lollie on the left and Rocky on the right.
Rocky is still eating just fine and is doing great he eats so much and is just a fatty even more so now than in that pic....should they treat him too?

Also, look how small Lollie is....will she gain weight after this is taken care of? Like I said she eats only baby food...and not much...I work with her until she just wont eat anymore. She does pretty good....but can she die from this? Like if she gets meds and stuff and her appetite quits even more? I am sooo worried about her. She is the sweetest little thing ever and i love her. I just wish she would eat. She hasn’t lost any weight she is just not gaining. I still havent heard back from the vet...does anyone have any suggestions?

I called the vet and asked them what it was and they said it is STRONGLY EGGS and the main dr was out but she would try to get info and maybe some meds. What are strongyl eggs? Please HELP! Thanks

strongylls are a typical internal parasites generally treated with panacur. My bearded dragon has strongylls (or had...we are almost done treating him for it, after two attempts), and the main thing is that they sort of gave him a calcium deficiency somehow. Maybe just from lack of eating and lethargy. I was about to start treating him for MBD, but I got results for another sample back, and after two weeks of dusting more he actually has too much calcium and uric acid.

It can sometimes be hard to get the healthy when they have something, because it makes them susceptable to other things, but they're our pets and we have to take care of them. Just so you know, I've had a lot of trouble with my beardie. First he had pinworms (most likely from crickets) which then led to coccidia, which is something dragons usually have in them, but the doesn't cause a problem unless they get out of hand (like I said, one problems leads into another). Then led to strongylls, though I haven't yet done the research on strongylls, so I'm not sure what caused them yet. We first treated him last summer and he was doing better, so I figured he was done with the parasites, but he still had some in him. From my carelessness (not doing a fecal before brumation) it got bad again and we started treating him again, and it made his calcium, phosphorus, and uric acid levels go crazy (which are some signs of possible kidney problems and metabolic bone disease). So now I'm continuing his treatment for strongylls, as well as keeping his calcium at appropriate levels, and force feeding him about 7ml of gatorade each day.

It's tough, but if you love your reptiles it's worth it. By the way, did you say that the other beardie has coccidia and is still in with the one infected with strongylls? If so, seperate them immediately and basically assume that they both possibly have coccidia too.

good luck

So do they both need to be de-wormed too? They said he had small small levels of coccidia but with her she had none?? Is that normal? They are in the same cage.
