venomous snakes in CA

bdymdifier May 10, 2004 04:13 PM

After searching the internet for laws regarding the keeping of venomous reptiles in California, I came across a site that says an individual may keep up to two of each venomous species indiginous to california without a permit, and any other venomous species kept requires a permit. What I'd like to know is A) what venomous species ARE in california, and B) how hard is it to obtain permits for an exotic species? (I'm interested in a gaboon viper)

First off you need to check your county laws as well, as for california the only venomous snakes we have are rattlesnakes. but a gaboon, no , you will never get a permit, also please bear in mind that a gaboon is very dangerous, AND you will not find a vet willing to treat one if you had one. If it gets sick you are on your own, I would suggest you stick with non venomous unless you have previously worked with hots.

If you purchase a regular fishing license in nrthn calif, you can kill them until the moon comes up and I believe you can kill them without this, I would think that the permit to catch one is the same as to have one also. I could check our local DFG handbook i acquire that will have this information as far as capturing. call the DFG they are listed on the net they could help you out.

IMHO, im not sure that a person who is as unfarmilar with Hot exotics to not know that Gaboon vipers are not California natives is ready to own a Gaboon. Plus i would like to add that Gaboons have the largest front fangs in the entire Viper/snake family sometimes reaching over 2.5 inches... Now look at your hand and realize that the fangs of this animal are large enough to push from the top of your hand through your palm the entire time they are injecting Venom..... I might start out with a fiesty Blood python before i would move to one of the most deathly animals known to man..... just in my opinion....Hots are not pets....
