Rosy Maple Moth Worms

ReptileZ May 10, 2004 05:46 PM

Anyone know if the caterpillars from the rosy maple moth are toxic for reptiles? They are in the same family as the giant hornworms.

Thanks

Well, I know that hornworms are toxic because of their food. If fed on tobacco or tomato plants, they are toxic. If fed on artificial food, they are fine. So I guess it probably depends on what they have been eating prior to you using them for food.

Are maple leaves toxic? (if that is what they are eating now) I doubt it, since Maple syrup isn't!-- but I don't know for sure.

IF not covered with hairs/spines they are prob.fine fare.
If they spit up 'tobacco juice' when you grab them, they may not be eaten in large nubers at a time but it won't kill anything imho.
Here there is an infestation of Winter Moth caterpillars which live on Maples too. They are relished by my lizards.
If I shake a tree, hundreds fall onto my plastic sheet.
