Greek questions - how often to soak and nasal discharge

Densie May 10, 2004 08:05 PM

I have a new Greek for a few weeks now and was wondering how often should I soak him. I have never seen him go into his water dish. Also today I noticed some clear discharge from his nose. He is eating well and I dewormed him too. I read that the humidity could cause that if it is too high. (?) He has a 90 F basking area and about 80 F elsewhere in his enclosure. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I soak my tortoise everyday for about ten minutes. Mine is just a baby though. If yours is older you can soak him every other day. I have heard the more you soak them the better they are. While mine was sick I was told to soak him twice a day for ten minutes.

About the discharge....I think I would take mine to the vets for a check up just in case. Especially since he is new. My tort had some bubbles coming out his nose and a very tiny clicking sound and he ended up having a respitory infection. It wouldn't hurt to get him checked out. Good luck!

Good advise!
Also what bedding are you using? Can you increase his basking temp to around 100? What are you feeding? Did you see the dicharge right after bath time? Have you created a humid hide?
Is it wild caught? My thoughts are yes it is and more then likely it is mid-east not Iberian.
The mid-east greeks don't do well with humidity, but do benifit from a humid hide. keep the cage humidity as low as possible. Give them a bath evry other to third day. I would take the water dish out, if you can keep up with the soakings. He will get his water from his soakings.
Do take him to a qualified vet asap. Make sure the vet you chose knows about herps and sees them on a reg. basis.
Feel free to contact me off-line if you need more help. I currenlty have 1.2 of these little guys. They are great once you get them settled in.
