get some prevent a mite it works great just follow the directions

Provent a mite wont kill mite eggs.If your corn is plastered with adult mites than you can count on eggs and further infestation.Go to any lawn and garden place, wally world/k-mart or hardware store and ask for 5% sevin dust.It runs about 7-10 bucks.Sprikle this under, around the top outside edges and under the newspaper your gonna wanna use till this is over.Take out all hides and bake or pitch them.Make sure you have your infested corn away from your new arrivals.Ive used sevin dust for over 20 years and it has never killed any snake period.Give your snake a good soaking then dry off well and use your hands to apply a light coating. After the first 24 you can soak your snake to get the dust off him.Leave the dust under the substrate and etc for a week.Any mite or mite hatchling wanting to dine on your snake will be dead in short order.I generally wait 2 weeks and do it all over again.I just f@$@#$ hate mites.

I would be careful using any of the pesticide chemicals with any snakes that are in their developmental stages (ex: hatchlings).

I'm not familiar with seven dust (5%) but many out there swear by it. I had a one time experience with mites in my 10 years of keeping herps and I had huge success with Provent-a-Mite and Repti-Relief. Whatever you decide, be sure to soak the snake in a bucket filled with mild soapy water (just enough for the snake to not struggle to keep its head out of the water). The soapy water helps breaking down the exoskeleton of mites. You can do this if you are waiting for Provent-a-mite to dry in the enclosure. Good Luck!

Kathy has used it.During my stint as a part time pet shop idiot *I treated around 200-300 mite encrusted reptiles.Including hatchlings.Everyone thought black knight was great but it's now off the market for some unknown reason. Then look sevin dust up online. They fed the crap to college kids in canada with no ill effects.Farmers around here use it on there dogs, cats, livestock,
I swear they put it on toast.Im using it now, with all my snakes
because I found adult mites on one of them.Ive been using the stuff since 1983 and walla no dead snakes yet.I would be leary of anything that hasnt been around for over 10 years.Im not knocking Jason's opinion. But he caught them fast and they didnt have time to make whoopi.Provent a mite will not kill the eggs the mites laid 30 feet from your tank.I know your worried and you can use whatever you want.I will swear by %5 sevin dust...
Paul.

Use one or the other, but not both! i don't know how long you should wait before trying a different pesticide, but I would wait at leat a week or two in between(probably more!!) before trying something different (unless the directions say differently) to avoid accumulated toxins.

I used Sevin for years, especially during our Glades Herp days when we got lots of new animals in every day and there were always a few coming in with mites. I am not aware of any problems that we ever had with it. However, it is not government approved for use on snake mites.

I never used Provent a Mite myself, but always heard good things about it. However, a customer called me last week and said she used a small amount on two young corns and one is now showing the same neurological symptoms as I have seen from No-Pest Strips (see the Cornsnake Manual for more details). That is the only time I have heard somebody report a problem.

Good luck!

After that, wash it off. You can sprinkle it on the shelves around the cages to make sure the mites don't travel between cages. Repeat the procedure at least one more time after a week or two.

someone once told me that you can use a pillow case and apply it like shake-n-bake chicken??? is it effective or appropriate to apply it that way? just curious.

Gargoyle420 May 14, 2004 02:59 AM

After i dry off the snake I hand rub it all over them,it keeps it out of there eyes.I do use my bare hands. No mite stands a chance with this stuff. For 7-9 dollars you can treat 100 snakes.I should say small snakes.hehehehe...Paul

kathylove May 14, 2004 10:35 AM

We used to call it the "shake and bake" treatment in the old days, LOL!

carl3 May 14, 2004 01:18 AM

no need to worry about 'knockin my opinion'...lol...its all cool. I proudly admit that I have extremely minimal experience with mites and I hope it remains that way.lol. I have heard many people use sevin dust with great success.

"But he caught them fast and they didnt have time to make whoopi." ~ that is too funny AND very true...lol...good observation.

As far as I've heard, Black Knight had legal troubles due to toxicity of ingredients or something. I'm not sure so DO NOT QUOTE ME, but I have heard that they have a warehouse full of the stuff waiting until their legal troubles pass. Please, correct me if I'm wrong?!?!? Its interesting b/c those that have used it, swear by it (for older herps, as some say its harmful for younger snakes?)

As far as Provent-a-Mite, it was effective for me BUT I failed to mention that I did follow many other steps in eliminating the short-term appearance of mites from my quarantined part of my collection. For one thing, I am extremely phobic of any & all bugs (spiders, insects, etc). I spent an entire day moving my entire herp room to another part of my home. I then thoroughly vacuumed/cleaned the herp room and sprayed other pesticides to eliminate the potential for mites to creep back into my herps enclosures. I aired it out appropriately and followed a few other tips by the way more experienced herpers.

VPI and Peter Kahl Reptiles are just a few that have great tips and info on their sites dedicated to these nasty bugs.

Good Luck and hopefully I'll never have to deal with it again...but if I do...I'm emailing Paul about sevin dust.lol.

Peace,
Jason
