Confused about carrot-tail

restlesswind444 May 10, 2004 09:38 PM

How long does it typically take for carrot tail to show up on hatchling leos? Is carrot tail line bred or recessive? I have 8 hatchlings now, all born of parents with some carrot tail, the females have quite a bit and my male has just a little. My oldest hatchlings were hatched on 4-14, and their mom had lots of carrot tail, still i see nothing yet. I've heard carrot is line bred but this is making me think it is recesive...please post any relevant information on carrot-tail-ism(?)
also is hypoism(?) line bred or dominant or recessive?
Thanks,
Chris

Those 2 you posted are not carrot tails. They just have some nice orange coloration in there tails,it should be line bred and the babies will likly have some too.
A carrot tail has a sold orange from the base of the tail with no spots mixed in.
Go to the photo gallery and look up the user name coolgecko, he has a nice picture showing what is a true carrottail.

Here's a pic of one of my best carrotails. He's a male that I got from the Urban Gecko a couple months ago. He was sold to me as 70% carrotail. His tail just keeps on getting more and more orange with each shed.
Take care,
Jason

You don't happen to have a photo of that leopard that you took do you? Let us know.

Those geckos look like they have some carrot tail blood especially the bottom one floid. That broad head I have seen in many carrot tails. Although they don't look like the really high end carrot tails they do have some of the characteristics of carrots. I mean I used to see Albey post 5% carrots! In some of my hatchlings the carrot tails from carrot tails that looked similiar to those. Sometimes the carrot doesn't start showing up until they are a few months old. It all depends. You just never know. I think those two should produce some good looking stuff. Keep us posted. Remember we don't yet have a American Leopard Gecko Breeders Association. YET!!! Standards are not written in stone. Nice looking leopards.

I personally don't care, I just try to go bye what everyone else trys to go bye. I think they are nice too, I just think if he was trying to sell them ever as carrot tails some people would throw a fit. They may have the genes, but i wouldn't call those particular females carrottails.

Heck I was told this guy wasn't a carottail, and I came to the conclution he has genes for carrottail but is nota true carot,I guess.

You are absolutely right. Probably the majority would not call them carrot tails. Just like yours though, its clear they have the influence in their genes. I mean its all subjectional. Heck look at all the hypos and super hypos being advertised out there. Alot of them don't even come close to being hypos or super hypos. Take care Sarah.
