speaking of feeding live another related question

mistysprouse May 10, 2004 09:40 PM

what do you guys end up doing with the live rats that the snakes won't eat? Do you keep them, freeze them or what?

I run into this problem often since they don't always eat on a reg schedule.

You need enough snakes that you can give it to another one.

On a more serious note, that's one reason I hate live feeding. if you can't find a snake that will take it you have to house it for a while.

I can't put them back in a tub, I don't breed them I buy them from a reptile store.

I have enough snakes that eat the same size but if two decide not to eat the same week then I am in trouble. I end up having to turn them into frozen rats that I will use to feed in the next round of feeding.

Well, if you are a regular customer, I know that some reptile shops will allow you to "return" them, so you can get them again next week.--Basically, a rat IOU.

Check with the store you got them from to see if they will do this. Some might not, for disease reasons.

You can temporarily and inexpensively keep rats by buying a cheap 10 gallon aquarium, metal screen top with clips and water bottle. Add some litter and food. This way you'll have the set-up in case the snakes decide not to eat again. Keeping rats for a week isn't that troublesome but just be sure the top is secure. They are escape artists.
