Carpet eggs

Gregz May 11, 2004 05:59 AM

A few post below I said my carpet laid 14 eggs well now the are 3 days old and they are starting to get dents in them. Is this normal? And will it hurt them? I did candle them and I can see veins and all eggs are still white my temp in the incubator is 89.6 - 90.4 and humidity is at about 90%. This is my first clutch, and I have a long way to go but I really don't want to loose these. Now I know why I had kids at an early age I don't know if my heart can take this...lol

Sounds pretty normal in my experience. What type of substrate are you using? If you are using something like vermiculite you may want to add some water. What I did was weigh them every week or so and when they were losing weight I would add a little water. Once again, probably nothing to worry about, but maybe someone else who has more experience will chime in with more advice. Good luck!

Three days sounds a little early for dimpling. You really want the humidity close to a 100% so that water is precipitating on the inside of the container. Don't panic too much, though. The same thing happened to me this year with some jungle eggs which dried out a bit while I was away for a week. I got the humidity up for the rest of the incubation period and they hatched out fine.
