A basic rule of thumb is not to feed any caterpillars that have bright warning colors. They tend to taste bad and might be noxious. Also, is there any active spraying for gypsy moths in your area? If so, don't feed it. Check with your county, Ag extension office, or city to be sure first. They should know if any spraying has been scheduled.

hey there it's been awhile since we've chatted

the hairs on these cats can be allergenic to humans as can their scales (moths). Another note, beside spraying there is a virus and a bacteria that is taking its toll on these destructive creatures (yipee!) and I have no idea if those would affect chams but it is one more reason not to risk it.

You're in NY, right? This time of year most anything you find that is plain green, no "hair," no red/black/orange/yellow combos. This does not a guarantee make..... if you are unsure you can check out a GREAT source for Eastern Forest Caterpillars so you can properly identify it and then look up more info or check with me and I will see if I can help. But you have to promise me you won't feed any silk moth cats (as in the giant silks: luna, cecropia, etc.) That's how Luna got her name so she and I will put a curse on you! Their eggs are typically laid in late June and the cats are wandering soon after.

I linked to the caterpillar site. This comes in book form and is free. email me and I'll send you the info.
