Shipping Help

Majesty_Cassy May 11, 2004 08:46 AM

I need to find a good way to ship Beardies. I am incubating 36 eggs from 2 clutches. I want to ship a couple babies to my Brother in Ca. I am in Ms. How old should the babies bee before I ship and how on earth do you ship a live Beardie?

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

I would not ship before 7-8 weeks, and 15-25 grams each myself. This is my opinion that's all and what I will stick by with my dragons for the most part. Some might agree, and some may disagree, but many, many ship younger, and much smaller for their own reasons. And shipping a dragon young or before it's time gives the receiver of that dragon less of a chance at success as they may not be as skilled with such young, and small dragons, and may overlook symptoms and signs someone more experienced would catch right away and correct. Packaging them though is basically the same for them, and I will point you to a few web sites that might come in handy for you with supplies and tips.

Superior Enterprise has shipping tips as well as all you will need to ship your baby beardies. Copy and Paste.

Also exoticlizards.com has some supplies for shipping and at good prices if you only need a few boxes and deli cups.

Also CheriS had a great post on how to prepare the babies for the safest trip, and making it the least stressful for them. I know she started preparing them for their trip a few days before and had a process which seemed to work great. I could not find it in the archives, but have an email to her asking for this write up or tip sheet she posted. I could not locate it on her site www.reptilerooms.com or in the archives here. Maybe someone else here has it saved or knows where to find it. Sorry I could not find cheri's as it was detailed, and the dragons she shipped out last season for the most part came out of the box eating machines, and took to a new routine rather quickly. The above sites should be a good start for you though. Good luck with the babies!!

we feed them a light dinner the night before and then separate them from the others. A small helping of salad first thing in the morning at 6 am in the prep tank and that is removed by 10 AM. Then they are given a few dropper of water during the day to hydrate them well and clear out their tummies. At 4-5pm they get some diluted pedialyte. At 6pm we leave the house, they are taken to the airport terminal to the Airborne counter around 6:20 pm, hugged and put in their box and sealed there. At 6:30 to 7:00 pm they start their journey, by midnight they are in Ohio and then on to their main location and delivered to their new home by 10:30 AM. Hopefully sleeping the time away. A busy day for a little one.

We have found that this routine clears out their tummies and they do not get sick from the trip or arrive messy. Oh forgot to mention, from 6:20-7 pm I cry , from 7pm to 10:30AM I worry and cry.

Thanks Bennett I think that was the one I was thinking of. I thought she had one on her site, but I must have been mistaken and read it here. On the receiving end she asked me to make sure the baby got fluids as soon as it arrived, so I gave it a nice warm bath and made sure it got some fluids, and put it right under the basking light and UVB to heat up from it's trip and bath. The dragon I got from her came out of the box with an appetite, drank, ate, and basked the rest of the day/night, and caught right on to my routine the next day without a problem at all with eating.
