fruitfly questions

JFC31 May 11, 2004 01:22 PM

I've been thinking of raising fruitflies for my 6-month old Nosy Be panther, but I don't know much about raising them or feeding them to a cham. Any answers to these questions would be appreciated:

1) Is it time-consuming/difficult to raise them?
2) What size/type container do you need?
3) How large do the flies get?
4) How easy is it to get them out of their container when it is time for them to meet their fate?
5) My cham is on a completely open enclosure(Chameleon Canopy)...will the flies just walk around on the plants until they are eaten? Any way they can escape?

Any other "must-know" info on fruitflies for chams would be appreciated.

Hey KFC (ha ha),

I have purchased FLIGHTLESS fruit flies in the past, and can only tell you that they can be a nightmare to keep.

They are super-easy to breed, but make sure you get FLIGHTLESS ONES!! (Otherwise your neighbors, depending on your ambient temeprature, will hate you for causing the neighborhood infestation - as they are prolific breeders).

As for them staying on the chamaleon condo...don't hold your breath. The flightless fruit flies have a tendency of being great "skippers" (they "skip" all over the place), and will usually follow the air currents of your house. Mine could always be found in the bathtub at the end of the day.

And as a side-note...I initially had my baby chameleon in a Repterium (is that how you spell it?), and I thought the tight mesh would hold the fruitflies - boy was I wrong!!! Those pesty little things could squeeze through the mesh and wander all over my place - ultimately ending-up in my bathtub.

By the way...I really dilike the Reptariums, as the plastic tubings are SUPER CHEAP and rot away after a while. (Mine even cracked on the bottom of all four legs, and dumped my whole enclosure on the living-room floor. (Thank God my cammy was OK after the ordeal). The mesh and Soft Tray are great, but go to Home Depot and make your own PVC tubing frame!!

As for feeding the fruit flies to your chameleon: keep a handful of them in a deep porcelain or glass bowl, and hand-feed them to your chameleon. Or you can "jerry-rig" something, and suspend the bowl of fruitflies near him. But make sure that the bowl IS NOT CLEAR, or your chamaleon will try to get the fruitflies from below the bowl, or through the bowl (not knowing what glass was), and hurt his tongue.

Hope this helped.
