How often?

Diamondback-dave May 11, 2004 02:18 PM

How often do you breed your adult female boas? I was told that some only breed a female every other year because some get burned out at an early age. Let me know what some of you do.

That question depends on the person. I'm assuming your talking about common boas BCI. My approach is to breed my females in their 4-5 year. and then every other year. Yes, there is a certan health risk involved in breeding them every year and it is proven that your females will not grow to their full potential and will have fewer offspring. But thats just one breeders opinion

I've only just produced my 2nd litter, but my belief and practice is to give the females at least one year off after they've been bred. For example, my female produced a litter in 2000 (from the fall 1999 breeding) and I didn't breed her again until the fall of 2001 (for the 2002 birthing season). That season failed - I think I separated them too early. Even so, I didn't breed her again until this past fall (2003) and she gave birth last Thursday (May 6, 2004). It's generally accepted that breeding a female every year is bad for their long term health and can actually shorten their life span. There are some breeders that feed the females heavily between seasons and get them to breed every year, but I'm with the group who's mindset is to give them a year off in between.

... they breed each other!

The ability to produce viable young year after year is the ultimate expression of health and vigor in wildlife. Any idea that breeders who allow their Boas to breed each year are doing something wrong is silly, and comes from a lack of understanding of the process.

That being said.. you will find that many female Boas will take a year off about every third year.

Keep your boas healthy in stable environments and let them decide when and if they will breed.
