if you use a rack, what temp do you keep each container at..?

sila May 11, 2004 02:46 PM

I cant see that there would be any temp. gradient in the small containers..I keep my two in tubs but the temp lately has been a constant 85. And this is with a UTH under each..Is this too low? Im thinking it is and need to bring up the temp without frying the thier undersides...What do I do? Any suggestions? BTW these are just pets not breeders if that makes a difference..

I have a couple homemade racks. I use flexwatt heat tape, but a UTH is very similar. Make sure your UTH is only under about 20% of the tub in the back, so they have room to get away from the heat. You didn't mention a thermostat. You can get an affordable and reliable thermostat from www.Bigappleherp.com
or more specifically:

They make a nice one that's around $30. Just secure the probe right above the UTH inside the tub and set it to 90. I hope this helps. Good Luck!

Be very careful with this method. Just imagine, the animal moves from its 80 degree cool side to the hot side, the 80 degree animal will be laying on the probe making it ( the probe ) think it needs to turn up the heat, this means your snake could be sitting on 100 degrees for some time.

If at all possible, place the probe on top of the UTH/under the enclosure.

That is true, I usually put the probe in an unoccupied tub. I forgot to mention that.

I use back heat and keeps the rear of the bins set at 92-93 degrees night and day.....I have the probe set in the bin so it is against the back of the bin and about half way up it the side of it (if that makes any sense)...They ambient room temp. goes from 82-85 degrees (use a Johnson thermostat on/off type so that is why the flucuations in the ract and room temps.)..Everything works cherry and the balls have garbage disposal appetites....good luck

I use the 35" long sterilite tubs in a rack system that is based upon the design described in Markus Jayne's web site. With a room temp in the low 70's the temperatures within the enclosures (assessed with Ray-Tek temp gun) is high 80's at end, low to mid 80's in center, and right at 80F at the front.
