buying adult corns

rttlrvenom May 11, 2004 04:33 PM

does anyone know where i could buy some adult corns that wouldn't run me an arm and a leg. An excepting to this would be some corns that will be ready to breed next season.
The reason i ask is because i eventually want to breed for blizzard, butter (motley and, stripe), snow motley, and mabe a see if okeetee motley will work (any one know). so if any one know where i can get some adults to start my breeding next year i would be greatly appreaciated.

Thanx

I would be concerned with WHY they want to sell them at all, although I don't know what your definition of expensive would be. It is much more cost effective to keep and breed the adults that you have spent years raising, rather than sell them, even for a relatively high price. Just do the math of what one average clutch would sell for wholesale of a particular morph, compared to the usual cost of adults. Sometimes you can luck out on a great deal when somebody is going to college, getting married or divorced, etc. That's what to look for, if you can find it. But you just as likely might find somebody who is trying to get rid of old or poor breeders without mentioning the whole truth to you. If you buy from somebody like Rich, you should be fine on the truthful part, but I doubt that he would sell them cheaply - you would have to check and see what you consider expensive.

I very rarely buy adults myself. I generally want to know the history of the individual and to be assured that it has grown up with the same conditions as the rest of my colony.

Just be cautious - good luck!

thanx kathy,

i totally agree with everything you said. So i guess ill just get some more babies and mabe a yearling or two that i can breed in a couple years. And hey if i wait a couple years i wont hurt cuz ill just be gaining more experence in the mean time. Plus i can get the morphs i need as hatchlings for less than it would be to buy the adult morphs.
now i just need to find out if my snakes are male or female

thanxs

You can't always find the colors you want in yearlings, but it is more likely than adults. You do tend to find a lot of extra males, since they often don't sell as fast. Some may be leftovers, but some may be extra "holdbacks" from breeders too. You can have a pretty good idea of adult colors, so you kind of know what you are getting. They are not old enough to be selling as worn out or poor breeders. And a lot of people sell perfectly good yearlings at low prices just because they have run out of room. Great idea if you can find what you want. But don't give up on babies - there is usually a lot more selection and availability on those, and they are usually cheaper.

buy from kathy or don there babies and yearlings eat right out of the box. a friend of mine got one of cathies reverse okeetees for me as a gift and he brought the box over after it was delivered to his door, and i fed him right away, he has never refused a meal, and he is gentle as a kitten.
