crankypunk May 11, 2004 06:36 PM

Well lets start of by the name.

everyone meet Skooter...

Here are a few questions on my mind and ive had many answers and cant decide what to go with...

How many baby crikets should i feed it ? and is it every day or every other day ?? at the moment i give him 3 baby crikets every other day ( i had him for 3 days now ) is this enough or should i add more.
When i gave him his crikets today 2 of them went in his house while he was already in there and they never came out then he poped out 5 min later to eat the 3rd one and back in is this normal behaviour because its still day time ??

also i think i saw his poop in the corner should i clean right away or wait for like once a week ? i hope he always uses that corner it will make it easy hehe

well hope you can help out answer these questions thank you in advance...
hope yall can help me out thank you in advance...

feed it as many calcium dusted crickets as it will eat. And feed it every day.

My leo's thrive on mealies... they are much easier to handle and they don't tend to jump away when feeding the leo's. But definitely dust whatever and I offer young leo's a baby jar lid with a crushed up calcium carbonate pill in it... They will lick it occasionally and pick up some calcium...

Give him as much crickets as he can eat, every day ! Dusting them with calcium every other day. They do poop in the same spot. I clean it every two day.

Well at all the petsops i visited around here (montreal) they all had them on some black or beige sand and all the people working in there said it was ok and they never had any issues using the sand that i got from them.

I also trust the petshop i got it from because they are clean and use to take care of our dog before we had to give it away.

StinaUIUC May 11, 2004 11:43 PM

There are very few trustworthy petshops....Any petshop that keeps young leos on sand and says it is ok to do so is untrustworthy.... Even if they did take decent care of your dog...that doesn't mean they know what they're doing with reptiles. NO baby leos should be kept on sand EVER... Only full grown adult leos can be kept on sand...and only if the owner has ALL other aspects of husbandry perfect. I would HIGHLY recommend getting your little one off the sand asap to prevent the possibility of impaction...especially since you are feeding it crickets. When hunting crickets it will invariably injest a great deal of sand...and you could very easily end up with an impacted leo.

If you choose to not take my advice, at least take StinaUUIC's advice. She is one of the most knowledgable (based on reading her posts and other people's comment) keepers of leos and her advice should be taken seriously. It's your baby, but I assume you want what's best from her, so take these guys' advice. If you are still unsure, do a search on the forum with leopard gecko sand baby juvenile, and you will see tons of posts backing her argument up. Just to clarify, nobody is attackin you whatsoever, we just want to make sure you and your baby have the correcto information. I also agree with her about the petshops. I recently had to call the Humane Society on one of my favorite pet stores (I bought my BCI from there). It killed me to do so, but then again I like animals more than people!

I've been corrected about things numerous times, and I've only been keeping leos since the end of December!! I have done my research though, and try very hard not to pass on faulty info. But like I said...I'm not perfect and I don't know everything...so just because I say something don't take it for granted that I'm right!....I'd hate to be responsible for any illness or death of anyone's leos because I gave bad advice!!!!

I know nobody's perfect. I just trust your info and so does everyone else. Your welcome for the compliment, but it really is coming from all the other people I have seen vouch for you and a couple of other guys. By the way, I don't feel you could be responsible for another owner's death, because ultimately it is the owner's responisbilty to make the final call, even if that call is based on somebody else's input. But anyway, keep up the helpful input. I also owner a crested gecko and a tegu, and I wish those forums where as popular as the leo forum (I know many more people have leos than rhacs or teiids, but still).

WOW, your leo is pretty good looking!!! i love those dark colors! let me know when you get more pix! how old is it? anyway, what you have in your tank isnt really sand, is it? its like a calcium gravel thing, atleast thats what it looks like, i use the same stuff in my hermit crab cages.
