Gecko not eating

snakefamily May 11, 2004 08:58 PM

We bought our first leopard gecko - Lulu at a pet store in December. He took a few days to warm up and then would eat 5 -6 crickets or upwards of 10 - 11 mealworms or waxworms a few times a week. A few months ago we went away and since then he has not eaten well. At first he would take only one or 2 worms at a time and for weeks (Months?) we have not seen him eat. We leave worms in the tank but we don't think any have been eaten. He still is "pooping" (what is the right term?) but it is now apparent that he has lost a lot of weight. The temp in his tank is appropriate, he has 2 hide areas and plenty of water. We have even tried an electrolyte solution from the pet store that he initially drank from the syringe well but then he wouldn't even take that. He is a very sweet guy (?Girl) but I am afraid that he is dying and have no idea why. Help.

Take him to the vet. www.anapsid.org/ has lists of Vets in various areas that know how to handle reptiles. Good luck!

Thanks for the link, found one in our town and Lulu's going tomorrow. We have pretty much done everything said. I might try the cut up mealworm though.

What are you feeding it?

If it's pooping, then it's eating something, but obviously not enough.

I had a problem with a gecko not eating.. I went thru mealworms, waxworms, pinkies, etc., but he wouldn't eat. I finally tried Crickets, and he went Hunting!!

So try giving him crickets, if you haven't. I know they're nasty, but most pet stores will have a cricket kreeper. Ask for it, and they'll show you how to use it.

If that doesn't work, keep a sample of his poop & go see the VET.

Hmm, don't feed it waxworms. They are like drugs to leos and they get addicted to them very easily. If he is losing weight, the first thing that needs to be done is get him to a vet. The vet might have you force feed you leo some jump start or something similar. To see how to force feed you leo, click here. Keep up posted.
