Are these two snakes eastern milk snakes?

CanopicJar May 11, 2004 09:05 PM

Following are two pictures of two snakes found in SW Ohio. Are they milk's? We also saw a similar snake a couple of days earlier except it was a very white snake with uniform round black marks down the back of the snake. It was a tiny one, skinnier than a pencil and about 8 to 10" long. Was it also a milk?

Thanks, Travis

ps - I dont know how to post two pics on the same post so I will post the 2nd snake pic next.

I believe they are water snakes. Could I be wrong?

Not a eastern milk. Looks to be a water snake. Do you have a belly pic? Where at in SW Ohio? I'm in Brown County.

Those pics were taken in Georgetown. I live in Bethel now, but grew up on a farm between Russellville and Decatur.

Sardinia was THE place to cruise when I was in high school. I graduated from Eastern in 1988.

D'oh! You are right, they are clearly Northern Water Snakes. We were back searching for the white snake with the black circular patterns on its back and all we found were a bunch of Queens snakes and several of these Northern Water Snakes. Any clue what it could have been? Unlike the northern water snakes the sides and belly of the this snake was all white.

According to Connant, some Northerns lack a belly pattern. It's a consensus.
