My meanest snake ever.

snakemastermyke May 12, 2004 01:16 AM

Macklotts pythons can be nippy. Scrub pythons can pack a punch. Blood pythons are kinda grumpy. Oh and don't forget the cranky arboreals like our emerald tree boas and amazon trees. However none of these top the rotten temperment of an untame pissy retic python. I just recently got a one year old to add to my breeding stock and I will tell you she is mean. She bites the hook everytime it gets near her. She bites the lid if you walk by the tank. She bites the Zoo Med Habi-Mister everytime it goes off and mists the tank. She has even bit herself while trying to strike at my hand. She managed to bite right through a pair of leather gloves my blood pythons never got through. She even bit the snake sack after she was in it. Man she is mean. Ever had a snake as mean as her? I bet she tops most she is really mean.

MAn, she sounds mean. and mean retics are never fun to play with. I cant top a nasty retic, but i did have a kingsnake that was close. He was an albino stripe cal king. He was there when i first started working at the petstore. No one would touch him...they avoided him more than the tokay geckos (lol everyone there but me were terrified of the tokays). Since i was the new reptile specialist, i had to get to know this snake. Consequently i named him Satan. He (as well as the other kings) were kept in smaller pals pens to keep them separated. One night, a tokay gecko landed on the top of satans pals pen. Satan grabbed the leg and pulled it through, tearing the foot off and stripping the musle off of the unfortunate gecko. I tried to save the gecko with no avail. Meanwhile, satan still lived at the store. He continued to grow (he was a neonate when we got him). Satan was sold, then returned, sold and returned again. He had gotten out several times, each time he was found he was eating other escapees (snakes, geckos, etc.). THe people that bought him returned him due to his nasty temperment. He would try to bite them through the containers he was kept in. They were bitten when they handled him, they were bitten when they changed his water. So, after about a year of this, the store gave me the snake. No one would keep him, and since i had grown fond of him.. he was mine. So, he would bite me every time i held him (which was oten), and the only way i could get him out of his tank was to put my hand in and let him muckle on. Otherwise, he would grab my hand in a fleshy painful spot. He would try to swallow my fingers, he would draw plenty of blood, one time i even had to hold him under water to get him off. I basically had to drown him to get him off once! And it wasnt because he was hungry either...i fed him plenty and he would still bite. I eventually had to sell him at a show, because my boyfriend and roomate were protesting poor satan (and he was getting BIG). So, maybe this doesnt quite top your retic...but i have had a crazy ass snake too. Satan...wherever you are, i miss you but i like my fingers.

The bite isn't as half as bad as a retics, but my bullsnake is way up there. WC male. 6 feet long. Strikes at everything moves. I have to toss a pillow case over his head to pick him up as he actually jumps and will attempt to come at me if I am standing nearby. Quite entertaining.

I can't top a retic, but had a diamondback watersnake that had a pretty nasty temperment. Just about anytime you come into range, he would nail you.

I got one. A beautiful female black and white cal king, a real b---h! Quick question. If I would to ever breed her would her personality be passed down to offspring? I would hope not but don't know.

There have been some studie son temperment and genetics. This is what we know. 1) Some mutations alter temperment. I.E. Tiger Retics are always calmer than regular... by a lot trust me!
2)Snakes aggresive nature are bred out in captivity. I.E. A second generation retic is much calmer than a wild caught would be. A wild caught anaconda behaves nothing like a captive bred one. 3) In breeding can lead to minor loss of mental abilities and instinctive habits which in turn leads to a nervous and more nippy snake. 4) A snakes health history determines partially its off springs health. A healthy snake is usually calmer than an ailing or less than perfect one.

As far as aggression passed down through breeding, it has been long since proven this is true in dogs, and cats so I would assume it can be can be concluded in reptiles as well though more research is needed. Now that would make a good doctoral thesis!

This one may not be the meanest, but she's near the top of a long list. She's a WC E. o. obsoleta/lindheimerii that struck at virtually anything - including herself - whenever there were human parts within striking distance. I released her earlier this week; she nearly bit herself while I was bagging her to take her back where I caught her.

Obsoletas are funny that way. They're by far the most variable snake I know of, at least around here, in terms of differing disposition from one to the next.
