help....bad eggs...

pweaver May 12, 2004 08:47 AM

I have several groups of leos, most are 1.2 or 1.3. I've been breeding these for about 2 years now. The first year, nearly all of the eggs that I got were fertile. Last year only about 50%. So far this year, I've had to toss almost all of them. When they are layed, they are more of a light gray color than white, and not very firm. After about a week or so they start growing white moss on them.
Any thoughts on why this could be happening? Since I'm dealing with 3 different males, it seems hard to believe that it's a fertility problem, but it must be. Could there be something missing from their diet causing this?

What are you feeding the females?

How old are the females?

What temperatures do you keep the gravid females at? The eggs?

The adults are all CB 01 or 02. The females weigh at least 60g. I feed them all crickets, gutloaded on greens, squash, potato, carrots, and cricket food from AB Herps. Sometimes they get some superworms as well. The cages are in a room where the temp ranges from 72 to 82 degrees. They are in aquariums with a heatpad on one side so they can have a hotspot. The eggs I incubate in a hovabator at about 82 degress.

we've been having some bad luck lately too. Most of our eggs have been fertile, but died. I honestly dont know what the deal is..maybe something in the air this season. It seems to be happening to alot of people.
I cant think of a darn thing ive done wrong.
Better luck next year, I suppose.

What calcium/vitamin supplements do you offer, and on what schedule?

I've been using MinerAll w/D3 since I have chams too, but I've been wondering if maybe that's part of the problem. I supplement them about once a week.

hmmm. Whats odd is last year I did wonderful on hatching babies, and this year im not..so im thinking this MIGHT be a possibilty. Last year I only supplimented with RepCal w/D3 Phosphorus Free, and this year im using the same, ALONG WITH Herptivite.

Do you think too much vitamins might be the problem?

Paul-

I did not have good results either wheh using MinerAll with the leos. If I were you I would switch to another straight calcium product (RepCal, OsteoCal). Always leave a shallow dish of calcium in with the breeding females, and dust breeding females food as well. You also may want to dust feeders with a good Multivitamin supplement, such as Herptivite or Vionate, twice a month.

Sounds to me like your eggs may be undercalcified.
