are my babies too small??

ecb May 12, 2004 09:44 AM

They are almost 1 year old, and STILL less than 3" long (NVL)
if they ARE the right size, then I have to estimate Tripod and Erik/a are a few years old, instead of 2-3, and Erowen is OLD, like 4 or 5, she is BIG, almost 5"
Do not get me wrong, they ARE growing, but they are a LOT smaler than I thought they would be at this date and time, I expected them to do a Lions share of their Growth this year, and slow down later, at this rate they will always be runts.
Its SO FUNNY to see them Profiling at me to scare me away when I go to clean out the tank, or after I feed them and put them back in the tank

I really HAVE to get my camera back up and running and get some New Pics up

These hatched 7/25/2004 so they are about 9 1/2 months old.

Here are the two smaller ones at 3" and 3 1/4" svl:

Here are both of them together:

And here are all four of them with the sizes noted next to each one:

By the time they are 18 months they should be a 4-5" svl but as you can see this will depend on the individual and some are much larger as adults than others. With A. capra this doesn't even seem to be determined by sex, just individual.

I will leave you with one last shot of two hatchlings from this spring. They are almost one month apart in age and you can see an incredible difference in size already. It's amazing how much they can grow in one months time. You can already see the legs bulking up. The oldest is not only longer but has really bulked up. What's funny is they really looked small until the new ones hatched! What's funnier yet is that the tiny one has really plumped up and grown in its short 10 day life!
