Some nice snake finds in S. Oklahoma last week...

johne May 12, 2004 11:15 AM

We found a total of 6 C. atrox, one was alive on the road, 3 DOR, and two were found while day hiking. We also found 2 western Massasauga...I'll just copy the herp list supplied by Ian Murray of New Mexico. They kid knows his herps, and how to find them. It was an awesome trip.

A few pictures from the trip.

Found several beautiful adult and subadult male Crotaphytus collaris. Only was able to get close enough to photo a couple. These guys are very wary.

A nice little female C. collaris found lounging on some rocks.

This Texas Horned Lizard was found basking on the highway, and was pleased to be photographed.

Small atrox found while night driving some backroads

the second small atrox soaking up some morning sun.

This is a nice male Prarie Kingsnake taking advantage of the warm roads this evening.

This is the largest diamondback we found. It was very friendly and never even struck at us...I'd guess it to be only 3.5 feet in length with an attitude of a 7 footer. It continued to buzz for at least 10 minutes after we left it. The sound could be heard from 50 feet away with little difficulty.

Those were all C. atrox in the photographs. A few people on the photo gallery page commented they loooked like easterns.

Hope you enjoyed the pictures.

I thought the rock type and Collard lizard type looked familiar. Brought back some really nice memories. One day I'll make it back there.
Very nice shots.

Those pictures look really good, what kind of camera did you take them with?

I use the Olympus C700 UZ...it has a 10X telephoto, but only 2.11. I never print pics, so that is really plenty for t-mail and monitor viewing.

Happy herping.
