My two 11 year old RES aren't mating?

jeff737 May 12, 2004 04:56 PM

I have had these two turtles for about 10 years now, since I was 4 or 5. I know one is a female(Leena) and one is a male(spike) for sure, but they have never mated, not even an infertile egg from my female. I have seen the male do the mating dance many many times, the female has only responded about 2-3 times, but nothing ever happened. Is this normal? Thanks.

Sure it is normal. There are lots of factors that can determine weather or not your female will actually become gravid and lay eggs. What kind of an area do you have for her to dig a nest in. If there is no land mass for her to bury eggs in she may just retain them in her body if she is carrying any (which is not really a good thing).

Well, she has a pretty well sized basking area, and I let them both out to walk around in my room a lot.

Jeff -

That's great that she has a large basking area but is it a dirt area or a solid type area. She would need a place to dig into to lay her eggs.

You really don't have to let them run around your room. I am sure that after 11 years of this they are not stressed by it but they are aquatic and just need their basking area to rest and good size area to swim.
