IBD in my python=Boa put to death?

chiropteragirl May 12, 2004 05:25 PM

My Ball python may have IBD (CNS symptoms).Vet can't see me til friday. Should I bring my Boa to the vet with me and just have it put down? Is there a point waiting for it to get sick? Last I heard you can't test a living animal for it. I know Boas can be asymptomatic for a while. What do you think?

Has your boa come in contact with your python? IBD is contracted via bodily fluid exchange.

I wouldn't do anything you might regret. Quarantine that boa right away. If he is infected, he won't be able to further spread the virus. If he's not, you still have your boa.

In the meantime, Take exta cleaning/disenfecting procautions. Used dilluted bleach to clean up after every animal. Don't play musical prey item, cage furniture, and water dishes.

good luck, chris

Yes, they have been in contact many times. After my Boa's quarantine was over I would let them out at the same time and would handle both. I have read that IBD could be airborne. Believe me the thought of losing either is killing me. Now I've just read that I can't buy new boids for at least six months. This is only in Boids, right? I have other snakes. I've been reading about IBD for two days now and I am not finding the answers I am looking for.

I couldn't tell you how many pages on IBD Ive read today, I'm sure some were old and outdated. you wouldn't happen to know anything else that might look like IBD?

Only CNS issues. It started when I found her partially on her back, when I picked her up she started "corkscrewing" aroung her self and she can't crawl. No tongue flicking at all. No signs of trauma. I've been trying to find a page that will list clinical signs of other snake diseases and disorders but no dice as of yet

what symptoms is you python showing? is it star gazing, regurgitating?

it could be a number of things...

if your animals have never had mites or ticks...it's probably not IBD.

the presence of IBD can be determined with a blood analasis.

good luck, chris

p.s. sometimes cryptosporidium looks like IBD

All central nervous symptoms. Never had mites in the year I have owned her. I found her partially flipped over and when I picked her up she was writhing around herself but she won't/can't crawl. I have not seen her tongue flick once since this happened.I don't see any external signs of trauma, no gross abnormalities of her spine can be felt with my fingers, I tried to check her pupils but she will pull away from the light in her eyes.

. The symptoms do sound like IBD but it could be other things.
Brain injury, spinal injury, electrical shock, poisoning, overheating?

just mt 2 cents worth. if you flip her over does she have trouble righting herself? corkscrewing? does it eat right? my opinion separate that snake from the others and practice strick hygenie. get it checked out. if it does, you might be fine with your others. just a word.

i really urge you to have some blood drawn before you make a decision...it would be really tragic to put her down for no reason....

So if it happens to be IBD I will have the Boa tested also. If she is positive, well, I will have no other boids to pass it to so why not see how far she goes. If she is negative, my sister bought her a mate that will be kept at her house until this fiasco is straightned out. You should all know I read her the Quarantine riot act
