just an observation about "dry" foods for uros...

npohworks Jun 16, 2003 08:24 PM

on a suggestion from a breeder, i just bought some of the repcal juvenile bearded dragon food to help supplement the seeds and such i've been offering my malis as part of their dry diet. and let me tell you, they DOVE on it like it was candy. i have never seen them all so universally interested in a food item since i offered them their first cricket treat. it was so darling! they food is scented like bananas, could help. anywho, just thought i'd share in case anyone has been looking for a healthy dry food (they seem to have oodles of vitamins and such in them to be more well rounded).

I thought about feeding that to my uros, but isn't it partially meat? And aren't they strictlyb herbovoires (spelling??) It smelles like bannanas, but does it taste like 'em?

npohworks Jun 17, 2003 09:04 AM

i don't recall it having meat in it when i read the label, and i can't really tell ya what it tastes like (i would assume something like bananas since smell and taste are so closely linked...). i do know that it has lots of vitamins and supplemented stuff in it already that most other forms of dry food don't have. and they seem to like it, so i mostly let them be my guide.

Could you tell me what brand it is? If it has no meat I might try it out.

I use ZooMed's Juvi Iguana Food. It might be about the same thing, but it doesn't smell like bananas. My uro doesn't seem to mind tho! He loves that stuff.

i checked the label, no sign of meat! says "with fruit" on the front. RepCal is the brand. i got a big ol' plastic thing for about $5 (you could probably find cheaper online). they like it by itself but i'm experimenting with moistening it and mixing it with their greens to see if they like the taste.

Uromastyx-lizards are not strictly herbivores (spelling )
A small amount of "meat" will not harm them; in free nature they also eat insects every now and then.

Hello from the Netherlands... this is my Uro-Website

This is debatable. This quote is from "Uro Nature" a website maintained by someone observing Uromastyx in nature in Israel:

"Uromastyx. O (ornatus) is absolutely herbivorous! His diet bases mainly on the flower & fruit of perennial plants:
Ochradenus baccatus shrubs & Acacia trees, (Acacia raddiana, Acacia tortilis,), Which is 84% of
their eating time. We found that the lizards are agile climbers, which get to the top part of the shrubs- trees
in order to get their favorite food, easily. The rest 9% consist of other perennial and annual plant. Flowers and fruits attract insects, So they eat them too, but it is lees then 1% of their diet."

i'm sure you're right, but when i have a couple extra crickets from feeding my monitors i generally have to fight my uros off to give it to them without losing a finger (more like a fingernail, it's so cute to see little quinn try to jump up and reach my hand as it comes down).

I keep bearded dragons and they eat mostly animal protein (insects), especially when young. I would not feed the juvenile bearded dragon pellets to your Uro as I'm pretty sure they contain a large amount of animal protein, which puts a large amount of stress on a Uro's kidneys. If you must feed bearded dragon pellets go with the adult formula; adult bearded dragons eat far less animal protein. Personally I would recommend sticking with iguana pellets, they more closely match a Uro's diet and have been out/tested for a much longer period of time.

i didn't notice particularly high amounts of protein on the label but you could be right. i had been debating at the store which one to try, and it just looked like the juvy pellets would be easier for them to snack on. thanks for the help!!!

i decided to check up on our protein theories when i was at the pet store today. i looked at juvenile beardie food, adult beardie food, iguana juvenile food, and adult aguana food. they all had almost the same crude protein amounts (the adult iguana had the smallest amount by ithink it was 2% at the most). and these aren't a staple, i just sprinkle a couple over the seeds, like paprika
