leopard gecko-sick or just old?

frogprincess May 12, 2004 09:50 PM

I have a female leopard gecko that is between 7-8 yrs of age. Up until a month or so ago she had been very healthy with the exception of her going blind.

For the past month she has been refusing food and her eyes stay matted shut. My vet says that the matting of her eyes is do to her not using them (twice daily I moisturize them and then must pry them open to release built up fluid in them).

I know that she has lived well past her expected age. Her tail is half of the fullness that it was a month ago and her skin is very loose, as if she is dehidrated. I do soak her almost daily in warm water for 15-30 minutes.

What do ya'll think? Is she possible sick or am I just having to face the fact that she is old and tired?

A leopard gecko that is 8 years old is not that old. I have heard of leos living well into the teens and past that. She is stil young enough to breed. I know that sometimes the do go blind due to bad breeding, but she is no where near old age. I would think that she has some sort of systemic infection. Find a new vet. that is my advice!

I have to agree here. A healthy leopard gecko can live for upwards of 20-25 years, and maybe even beyond that. She is definitely not considered "old". Time for a new vet!
