pot-bellied iguana?

atomic May 12, 2004 10:11 PM

So we've had Grass about two months now, and he's slowly regained his health after what I can only guess must have been some pretty horrible conditions. He was skin & bones; just awful...

Well now he's going the other direction! We're getting just a teeny bit concerned, as the big guy's belly just keeps growing!

His diet is straight off the Green Ig Society food list, very strict. Doesn't even get any pasta/bread/rice. And only a little fruit, once in a while. So why the big gut? If he was female, I'd be thinking gravidity, but he's most definitely male.

Should I be worried? Or is it ok for igs to get a little on the chunky side?

Thanks in advance for any advice,

atomic (human) & grass (ig)

Yeah, every morning like clockwork. Though it's been a little loose the last week or so. Could that have anything to do with it?

have you been to the vet and had him checked for parasites? They can make them appear bloated or pot bellied and contribute to loose poop.

Ya, if he is pooping ok, i would say that it is probably roundworms. Especially if he was kept in deplorable conditions prior to your home. See a vet. Good luck

Thanks guys. I will take him in!

Could be worms. Get him vet checked. In mammals worms make their bellies bloat. Maybe in igs too.

My female iguana, Iggi, has a bit of a chubby belly too. Don't worry. You cannot overfeed an iguana. However, I would take Grass in for a fecal float, and well lizard checkup at a local herp vet ASAP. This way, if there are any problems, you can find out sooner, rather than later.
