New here...have some questions

Meghan20 May 12, 2004 11:46 PM

I have three bearded dragons right now, all juvies and I'm wondering about a few things. You see, I used to have and breed beardies but I was very ill for awhile and had to give them away. Now I'm starting again and I've heard a few new things about beardies...

1. Beardies should not have spinach, it messes up their calcium intake.
2. Instead of UV lights there is some sort of food or water supplement that works instead. (this one seems kind of dangerous to me)
3. There's a lot of different opinions about when beardies can safely breed...not sure which is true anymore.

If someone could please tell me more about these things I'd really appreciate it.

Oh and I'd like to know what breeders are good to buy from, I'm very nervous about being ripped off by altered photos and whatnot. Right now I have an orange male, a blood red female, and a sandfire gold/GG female and I'm looking for more color morphs so if you guys know of some good breeders' websites it would be very helpful.
(sorry the post is so long)
Thanks,
Meghan

spinich is high in vit. A (67 IU/g), high in oxalates (19:1 ox:ca), goitrogens
the oxalates prevent calcium from being absobed into the body. go to www.beautifuldragons.com nutrition section for the best info on food and lots of other great stuff

there are suppliments containing calcium and D3. the D3 helps the body absorb the calcium as does UVB. It is hottly debated as to if it can replace UV. My philosiphy is better safe that sorry. I use UV lighting.

Take your pick, lots of people on both sides. If you want to be totally safe, 18 months old, 350grams and 17 inches

go here for a lot of common Q&A
www.beardiedragon.com/pages/Care/beardiecare.htm

there are several breeders including myself on this forum that produce wonderful BDs. What type are you looking for? normal? citrus? snow? Florida Orange (that's me)?

Thanks very much, I appreciate your help. It's funny, I'd actually been to your website a lot even before seeing your post and am quite impressed with your beardies. My three are still settling in but pretty soon I'll be looking for more!
