As long as they are young and healthy they should do fine.

Pet stores are fine. You cannot, however always count on the pet store clerk to accurately sex your new mice. It is not uncommon to ask for 1 male and 3 females and wind up with a totally different mix, especially if you get very young (hopper) mice. Slightly older males will be easily identified. Also. Expect it to take 2 months for your first litter to be born. It may come a little sooner than that, but don't ration your snake food expecting that these new mice will take over immediately. Start breeding well before you "need" the food. I have had astounding (at least to me) success in maintaining 2 1.4 colonies. After the first couple of months they more than supported 4 young corns, a yearling 50/50 cal king, and an african house snake. Once breeding starts, however, it doesn't stop. Decide now on the method you'll use to dispatch the mice and plan a space in your freezer to hold the overflow.
