Eating can be hazardous to your health...

redhed May 13, 2004 04:04 AM

Here's the now famous Diega, in the process of consuming a juvenile capybara, that gave her this injury when she first grabbed it. This is the #1 reason why pregnant females rarely eat.

The worst/best part? The capybara was a research subject of my roommate who was studying capybaras for her PhD...the poor animal had just been released after being caught, measured, and tagged. It ran off, and within seconds...bam. We named it Diega, after the other capybara researcher present, whose name is Diego...who we left muttering, "Yo ODIO las anacandas..." (I HATE anacondas.) (It was an incredibly cute animal...)

2 weeks later, we caught Diega, put her in an oil drum, and waited til she defecated to get the specimen and record it, as usual. We gathered up the poop sample, including a little fur, and one little green ear tag - in a jar and presented it to our roommate, thanking her for letting us borrow one of her research animals, and that she could have it back now. Funny, she didn't appreciate our gesture.

...not only hazardous, even fatal, such as when the turtle is just way too big (and with a sharp edged shell) even for an anaconda. This old girl didn't survive, although she hung on for quite a while, considering.

WOW Renee, That is disturbing to see. But it is the harsh truth about wild anacondas. That is the number one reason we as hobbiest should only feed prekilled, apropriet sized meals to our beloved reptiles. Thanx for the pix Renee.

Pregnant female, with the sock treatment, as usual...

Quite a porker, and really beautiful, healthy. (This was "Godzilla", not Marion - a much more good-natured snake than Marion.)

Her previous meal, I believe, was a caiman.
