Help. Little bug in with feeder foods.....

LindsayMarie Jun 16, 2003 08:44 PM

Well the other day I cleaned out my cricket bin and noticed what at first looked like a legless cricket. Then I looked closer and it was crawling, kind of like a centipede. Looked like a cross between a centipede and a caterpillar. It was brownish, blackish, with a furry look to it. Im assuming it had many legs, but to be honest I couldnt really tell cause I squished it. Anyways, it was the only one I saw and it was about 1/4" big. Any clue what it is?

PLUS, I was giving my lobster roaches some food and water today and noticed that there was a tiny greyish looking bug, in the food bowl, on the chicken mash. It was pretty small like 1/16" inch maybe a little bigger. It was the only one I could see and was kind of ovid in shape, longer rather then wide. If that makes sense. Anyways, it kind of resembled the other bug in its movements, but was smaller, lighter in color. I too squished it because it was pretty fast and I couldnt get ahold of it to look closer and didnt want to lose it into the shavings of the roach bin. So whats going on? Are these just stray bugs finding their way in, or am I going to get some kind of infestation? Are they mites? The bins are fairly low in humidity and I dont see anymore? But I didnt take a magnifying glass or look to closely.

I use no substrate in the cricket bin and I use pine shavings in the roach bin. For main food I use ground up egg laying mash (non medicated). I also add tropical fish flakes, greens (occasionally) along with rinsed apples, potatoes, carrots, oranges etc. Could they be coming from any of the above foods? Thanks, Lindsay

The one in with the crix is sort of a cleaner sort and is okay, though I too squeash them. The one with the roaches I don't know but tend to think the same.

Its called a Dermastid beetle. The litle legless caterpillar thing you saw was its larvae form. The little beetle can fly. They are great cleaners of flesh from bones, dead crickets, etc
