seeking advice on BRB holdbacks.

Last month my female Brazilian Rainbow gave me a great litter of 23 babies. I have decided to hold back two females for myself, I have decided on one for sure and cannot decide on the second one from these two. They are very differently colored, one is very light and the other is much darker.

I am leaning towards the lighter one but since I am some what inexperienced with Boas I was hoping somebody could shed some light on how she will turn out. Will she get more color, she is kind of drab right now. Thanks for your time, Dave

I would keep the darker one since it seems to have much more orange/red coloration and that's what I like, but you should keep the one you like best no matter what others think. I don't have any experience with BRB's other than one my friend had. Also, if your other holdback is very dark or very light, you may want to keep the opposite (you know what I'm trying to say here?) just so you can see for yourself how they'll end up as adults. Just my thoughts-hopefully someone with lots of BRB experience like maybe Jeff Clark can give you more info.

I think you should send them both to me... <g>

Seriously, they are lovely, and either would be a great choice. I like the darker orange myself, but I wouldn't turn down either one...

Congrats on being stuck with such a hard decision!!

The first one by far. The second one is nice but it seems everyone has that "type". First one is more interesting and IMO prettier.

brb's are so unpredictable when it comes to color changes, you never know how they're going to turn out. so, i'd keep about 3 or 4 of your favorites based solely on pattern (and hopefully you'll get a group whose current color is as diverse as possible). then at about 2.5-3 years of age, decide which of those you like best
if that's not feasible, then pick based on personality/looks.

I have had 7 brazilians and the color change for babies is sooooo unpredictable. I had three from one litter that all looked completely different 1 year later.

I had a male from another litter that was even lighter that the one in question. He is not pretty dark with light yellow spots.

I also had one that was drak with orange spots as a baby and it stayed dark but the spots remained orange.

To me the orange is more desirable so I would stick with the darker one because if I had to bet money the lighter one will darken up...

but I would keep them for a year and see what happens and then decide. It would be interesting to see a pic 1 year from now of these two.

Dave,
I agree with most of the others here. These snakes are a litle unpredictable. Do like JB says and hold back several and see how they look in 18 months. I find it real easy to raise them up in shoeboxes at first and later switching to larger boxes. You can easily sell all your babies now but you will find even more demand for them when they are bigger.
