Roaches ok for leos?

boidsntegus May 13, 2004 12:46 PM

Are roaches safe for leos? What would be the best species to feed? I hate crix and mealies, and roaches just seem easy to keep and breed. What does everyone else feed as a alternative to crix/mealies?

ive heard of people using them, so I figure they'd be safe. But ive never used them...ewww. I have a phobia of roaches. So I cant help ya there. But I do think they are safe, just definitely not the ones you'd find in your house or around it.

It's just a bug, whats "ewww" about it? Lots of people say ewww about reptiles, but hey, we all have them. Mealies are just a pain, plus I feel roachs would be much more nutritious. They also have an extremely low death rate compared to worms or crix, and they breed easy. Lot's of people love to feed roaches, I just didn't know about for leos.

I feed:
1) Lobster roaches (Nauphoeta cinerea)
2) Orange head roaches (Eublaberus prosticus)

Some other non-climbing species are:
1) Death's Head Cockroach (Blaberus craniifer)
2) Discoid roach (Blaberus discoidales)
3) Orange spot roach (Blaptica dubia)

Lobster roaches are glass climbers and orange heads are non-glass climbers (easier to work with). Adult leos can easily take an adult lobster. Feed only the baby orange heads and babies from the species below as adults are way too big. Lobsters are very prolific while the non-climbing species don’t produce as fast.

Cody summed it up quite well. I don't know if he has his FDA permit, I don't yet but I have a few suppliers that do. Send me an email and I'll forward it along to them.

You have to have a permit to keep roaches?

No, you need a permit to sell and ship insects across state lines. And each species needs to be declared when applying for the permit.

I'd much rather have an associate that already has gone through the process drop ship for me than go through all that.

Check out the feeder classifieds on KS. There are usually a lot of roach ads. You could also check out www.crunchy-critters.com.
