Eating habits in males

maneatingorchid May 13, 2004 02:01 PM

I've noticed that my males MHD (I got from Froggie B- he's gorgeous) hasn't eaten on his own at all this week. I've been feeding all nightcrawlers for about 6 weeks- could it bee boredom. I'm getting him some crickets for variety tonight. I offered some superwoms, but he really wasn't intruiged at all. the girls are still chowing down fine, and the temps and humidity look good, and his activity level hasn't changed (he's pretty lazy anyway), but he just isn't hungry. He also hasn't been housed with any animals that aren't dewormed. Any ideas?

I wouldn't worry too much yet. It isn't uncommon for males to get lazy and go on hunger strikes. I know he was always a bit of a fatty so I would just gauge his condition by his weight. If he were to look thin I might be concerned but at this point I wouldn't look at force-feeding or anything. If anything a good misting or direct rain on him and maybe some electrolytes if anything.

I start my babies on crickets and mealworms and by the time they are 3-4" SVL (snout to vent) they are taking nightcrawlers or red wigglers, silkworms and roaches with the crawlers being the main part of their diet. If you have access to other fair sized feeder it's always nice to offer variety. I thing they do get bored sometimes.

Hope his appetite picks up soon!

It was boredom. I picked up some crickets- no interest. So then my boyfriend got some superworms and he ate 5. Hopefully, he'll want nightcrawlers again soon, though. I prefer to feed those.

I'm glad he's eating. They get that way sometimes. I think they like to see us sweat!
